Now that the cost for sequencing DNA has been reduced to several thousand dollars per person, “precision medicine,” or “personalized medicine,” which uses knowledge of an individual’s unique genome to treat, or pre-treat illnesses, is expected to grow exponentially, although objections to personalized medicine remain due to the fact that it may lead to expensive, unnecessary and possibly harmful treatments.

An essential step in genomics research is separating DNA molecules from bodily fluids or tissues. This preparation requires centrifuging the sample, straining DNA out with micro filters, or separating it by gel electrophoresis. To run large-scale genomic assays, the DNA is treated with reverse transcriptase to create complementary DNA (cDNA), tagged with fluorescent or dye molecules, hybridized to a validated probe array on the surface of a microarray slide, and then scanned and analyzed.

Once an organism’s DNA is sampled and stored, the data are compared with validated genomic libraries or databases to identify the differences between that individual and the whole population.
