Adiponectin is a multimeric adipocyte-specific secretory protein that regulates energy homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and insulin sensitivity with direct anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Adiponectin predominantly inhibits proliferation of myelomonocytic lineage cells and is an important negative regulator in hematopoiesis and immune systems. Adiponectin is reported to possibly function as an endogenous factor involved in lipid catabolism and storage or whole body metabolism. It is decreased in obesity and has been demonstrated to inhibit tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced expression of endothelial adhesion molecules. Adiponectin modulates the inflammatory response of endothelial cells, possibly through cross talk between cAMP-PKA and NF-kappaB signaling pathways.
