5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl beta-D-galactopyranoside (X-Gal) is a chromogenic substrate for beta-Galactosidase that forms an intense blue precipitate. Application Notes: Can be used in molecular biology to detect the gal gene product, and also in microbiology where it is used to detect micro-organisms which have beta-Galactosidase activity (using coliforms). X-Gal is most commonly used in blue/white cloning systems. Can be used in microbiology media and cell culture media.
