Cancer Research
Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases of the 21st century and cancer research commands large portions of national scientific budgets. With new capabilities for DNA sequencing, scientists can now sequence and analyze the genes of thousands of cancerous tumors of a particular type to categorize and classify them, and hopefully determine the best treatments for each category.
Cancer researchers are also investigating “switches” that block gene expression leading to cancerous cells. Meanwhile, by using an individual patient’s exact DNA sequence, doctors hope to someday provide customized cancer treatments.
Equipment for cancer research labs includes cooling blocks and thermal cyclers for incubating samples; cryogenic freezers; real-time PCR systems; magnet plates for magnet assisted transfection (MATra) of cells; and microarray slide processing stations.
For research on tumor growth, 3-D cell culturing systems support and nourish embedded tumor cells, allowing them to spread naturally within a hydrogel matrix. Automated microscope-mounted mechanical cell strain instruments allow researchers to observe cells, including tumors, growing while undergoing cyclic stretching and compression, simulating the forces experienced by muscle fibers and other cells in vivo.
Consumables used in cancer research include reagents for (reversible) staining of MHC I T cells; fluorescently labeled oligonucleotides; cell staining kits; labeled or unlabeled purified RNA duplexes (RNAi); cryopreservation freezing medium optimized for neurons, stem cells and primary cells; real-time PCR primer pairs; targeted knockout toxins; and plasmids and lentiviral constructs.
