Imaging / Microscopy
Microscopy is the imaging of a specimen using optics to provide a closer, more detailed view than is possible with the naked eye. From the simplest bright-field microscope to the most advanced atomic force microscope, researchers use imaging systems in all areas of microbiology, such as drug development, clinical research and testing, environmental monitoring, genomics and proteomics.
Every microscopy system uses a beam of visible light or some other electromagnetic radiation transmitted through or bounced off the surface of a specimen. The system then captures the altered rays, and either magnifies them directly, or compares them to the original energy source to create a magnified image of the specimen.
Optical microscopy systems use a light source and one or more optical lenses to magnify the specimen, which can then be viewed through an eyepiece or on a digital camera in real time. Other imaging systems use alternative radiation sources, such as infrared (IR), near-infrared (NIR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation, electron beams or X-rays, to allow researchers to visualize different details with greater resolution. By using different systems and employing a range of advanced techniques, individual cells and cell features, as well as molecules, such as proteins and other antibodies, can be seen.
Life sciences laboratories use a wide variety of instruments for imaging and microscopy, such as Raman spectrometer and spectrophotometer microscope attachments, inverted microscopes, atomic force microscopes, laser and LED illuminated microscopes, confocal microscopes, structured illumination microscopes (SIM); Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy ™ (STORM) systems; and shielded X-ray imaging systems.
Imaging and microscopy accessories include motorized stages to orient the specimen in 3-dimensional space; CCD, CMOS and other digital cameras; fluorescent dyes and stains to contrast different parts of living cells; image acquisition and processing software; darkroom in vivo imaging systems; light sources and transilluminators; and microscope objectives.
