Mass Spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is a sophisticated laboratory technique used to identify and quantify molecules and compounds in complex unknown mixtures. Mass spectrometry is used in food safety, environmental monitoring, clinical research, regulatory bioanalysis, small molecule research, drug discovery and development, proteomics and metabolomics.
Mass spectrometers measure the mass to charge ratio of a charged particle (ion). Different MS systems use varying technologies to generate, store and sort the ions. For example, orbital trap technology electrostatically traps the ions in an orbital oscillating pattern, which creates distinct electronic currents that can be processed to analyze mass data.
Microspectrophotometers combine a microscope with a mass spectrometer for non-destructive rapid analysis in wavelength ranges from deep UV to near-IR, using absorbance, reflectance, Raman, luminescence and fluorescence techniques. Other systems combine a mass spectrometer with a front-end chromatography setup and/or with a second mass spectrometer (tandem MS). These include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) platforms; liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) systems; and triple quadrupole systems (LC/MS/MS).
