DEC1 (differentially expressed in chondrocytes 1) and DEC2 are E-box-binding transcription factors that exhibit a circadian expression pattern. Both proteins act to repress the Clock/Bmal1-activated E-box promoters via direct E-box binding rather than Bmal1 interaction. In addition, DEC1 is shown to negatively regulate the expression of DEC2. Markedly increased DEC1 expression is observed in colon carcinomas, whereas the opposite trend is seen with DEC2. Likewise cellular DEC1 over-expression results in a proportional decrease in DEC2 level.
