The BCL2 antagonist of cell death protein (BAD) was previously known as proapoptotic BH3-only protein. The zebrafish genome was found to encode structural and functional homologs of the mammalian BCL-2 family members. These proteins are known to control the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Upregulation of apoptotic genes, including BAD, was associated with an increase in apoptosis in zebrafish. Due to the functional and structural similarities between mammalian and zebrafish BCL homologs, zebrafish are a relevant model for the study of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
