Humans are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from occupational, environmental, and medical sources. Benzo[a]pyrene is a carcinogenic PAH found in cigarette smoke, heavily polluted air and smoked foods. A diol epoxide derivative of benzo[a]pyrene, 7b, 8a-dihydroxyn -9a,10a-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (BPDE-I) has been implicated as the key mutagenic benzo[a]pyrene metabolite involved in covalent modification of DNA.
