In mammals the BMP-1 gene encodes both the BMP-1 protein and the mTld protein on two distinct, alternately spliced mRNAs. Both of these proteins exhibit procollagen C-proteinase activity and play a vital role in bone development and collagen formation. BMP-1 also cleaves C- and N- propeptides from other precursor proteins including procollagens V (2) and VII (1), chordin (3), prolysyl oxidase and probiglycan.
