CD18, a 95kD protein, is a beta2-integrin subunit expressed mainly on leukocytes. It is a member of Integrin family and consists of an extracellular domain, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic tail. It is non-covalently attached to CD11a, CD11b or CD11c to form LFA-1, Mac-1 and p150, 95 beta2-integrins respectively. It is essential for the binding of alpha sub-units to specific ligands and is crucial for proper functioning of individual integrins. CD18 also has a role in cell adhesion and migration. CD18 deficiency in humans reduces inflammatory cell recruitment of leukocytes.
