CD35 is a multiple modular membrane glycoprotein and belongs to the Regulators of Complement activation (RCA) family. It is expressed on the surface of granulocytes, monocytes, erythrocytes, B-cells and follicular dendritic cells and consists of highly conserved Sushi domains in the extracellular region. On erythrocytes, CD35 mediates immuno-adherence by binding and processing immune complexes and transfers them to liver and spleen. On granulocytes and monocytes, CD35 mediates attachment and ingestion of complement-coated targets. On B-lymphocytes and follicular dendritic cells, it facilitates the localization of complement-coated antigens to immunocompetent cells. It functions as receptor for C3b and C4b and also regulates complement activation. CD35 consists of different allotypes and variation is this protein is basis for Knoops blood group system.
