CD54, a 75-114kD inducible surface glycoprotein, is a novel member of Ig superfamily consisting of 5 Ig-like domains in the extracellular region, a transmembrane region and a short cytoplasmic tail. It is expressed on endothelial cells, leukocytes, Lymphocytes, and Monocytes and is used as a functional receptor for Major group of Human Rhinovirus. It binds to CD11a/CD18 (LFA-1) and CD11b/CD18 (Mac-1) and promotes the adhesion and transendothelial migration of leukocytes during inflammatory responses. Its other functions include Cell-Cell adhesion during immune responses, activating signaling pathways in endothelial cells and functioning as a co-stimulatory molecule for T-cell activation in APCs. Its expression can be up-regulated by various stress stimuli and inflammatory cytokines and involves NF-kB dependent and independent signaling pathways.
