Cadherins are calcium dependent cell adhesion molecules. E- cadherin, also known as cdh1, is expressed during early embryogenesis in blastomeres, the anterior mesoderm during gastrulation, and developing epithelial structures. Cdh1 was detected at the pharyngula stage in the midbrain-hindbrain boundary. Morpholino knockdown of E-cadherin in embryo studies was found to reduce embryo survivability; early embryonic cdh1 MO knockdown resulted in irregular cleavage plane orientation between blastomeres. Cdh1 knockdown also resulted in inhibited epiboly cell movements and gastrulation cell movements. Prechordal plate derivatives were also absent in Cdh1 knockdowns. Co-injection with E-cadherin mRNA served to demonstrate the specific activity of E-cadherin morpholino knockdown.
