Regulated progression through the cell cycle requires sequential expression of a family of proteins called cyclins. Upon their induction, cyclins form complexes with specific cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), creating active holoenzymes that phosphorylate target proteins required for cell-cycle progression. CDK5 is expressed predominantly in post-mitotic cell populations, and potentially regulates early neuronal development in zebrafish. CDK5 is responsible for regulating neuronal migration, differentiation, axonogenesis, synaptic transmission and apoptosis. Zebrafish CDK5 is 96% identical to the human ortholog.
