Chlamydia pneumoniae, also known as Chlamydophila pneumonia, is a Gram-negative, aerobic, intracellular pathogen. In humans it is a major cause of pneumonia, pharyngitis or bronchitis. Pneumonia may be caused by a variety of microbes and is characterized by cough, fever and breathing difficulties. Treatment of pneumonia caused by C. pneumoniae is different from that caused by other agents, although symptoms are indistinguishable. Prognosis of pneumonia caused by C. pneumoniae is usually excellent with hospitalisation and complications rare. The antigen preparation is inactivated using gamma radiation. TWAR is a species of the genus Chlamydia that causes respiratory disease. It is distinct from the two other chlamydial species that infect humans sharing less than 10% DNA homology.
