Cortisone

Cortisone is a hormone. Chemically it is a corticosteroid with formula C21H28O5 and IUPAC name 17-hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone. It is closely related to corticosterone. Cortisone and adrenaline are the main hormones released by the body as a reaction to stress. They elevate blood pressure and prepare the body for a fight or flight response. Cortisone is the inactive precursor molecule of the active hormone cortisol. It is activated through hydroxylation of the 11-keto-group by an enzyme called 11-beta-steroid dehydrogenase. The active form cortisol is thus sometimes referred to as hydrocortisone. Cortisone is sometimes used as a drug to treat a variety of ailments.\n\nApplications: \nSuitable for use in ELISA and RIA. Other applications have not been tested.\n\nRecommended Dilutions:\nRIA: 1:20,000\nOptimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. \n\nStorage and Stability:\nMay be stored at 4 degrees C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20 degrees C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.

Crossreactivities were tested using an ELISA with cortisone-3-cmo-x-biotin: Cortisol: 3.4%; 11-Deoxycortisol, 11-Dehydrocorticosterone: 0.6%; Tetrahydrocortisone: 0.2%; Cortisoterone, Deoxycortiscosterone, Progesterone, Aldosterone: <0.1%; Allotetrahydrocortisol, Tetrahydrocortisol, Cortol, Cortolone, 11-Hydroxyetiochoranolone: \n<0.01%. Species Crossreactivity: A broad species crossreactivity is expected based on conservation of sequence homology.
