Regulated progression through the cell cycle requires sequential expression of a family of proteins called cyclins. Upon their induction, cyclins form complexes with specific cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), creating active holoenzymes that phosphorylate target proteins required for cell-cycle progression. Cyclin A2 (ccna2) is involved in cell cycle control in the S and M phases. One study demonstrated that Cyclin A2 is necessary for visual system development and function. Within humans, Cyclin A is complexed with CDK2 and is a crucial element during S and G2/M phases of the cell cycle, although the mechanism of regulation is not well understood.
