Cyclin E2, a 404aa protein, is a member of highly conserved E-type G1-cyclin family. Cyclins bind to and activate CDK kinases to form serine/threonine kinase holoenzyme complexes that regulate eukaryotic cell cycle. Cyclin E2 is localized in the nucleus and shares significant homology with Cyclin E and its expression revolves throughout the cell cycle, with peak expression during G1-S phase. Cyclin E2 binds to and acts as a regulatory subunit of CDK2. It controls the G1-S phase transition during cell cycle and regulates the activity of CIP/KIP family of CDK inhibitors. Its expression is abnormally up-regulated in certain tumors suggesting a possible therapeutic intervention.
