Dopamine Receptor is expressed in brain regions associated with cognitive, emotional, and endocrine functions. DRD3 mediates the effects of drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. DRD3 also binds BP897, a potent inhibitor of drug-craving and cocaine-seeking behaviors. Mutations in DRD3 lead to sodium retention in the kidney, resulting in hypertension and increased locomotor activity in mice. Multiple isoforms of DRD3 are produced by alternative splicing.
