EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) is expressed in nearly all tissues of the zebrafish. Its counterpart, EGF (epidermal growth factor) is expressed within the ovary and testis. Within the ovaries, EGFR expression is limited to follicle cells, suggesting that it plays a role in regulation of follicle cells by oocytes expressing EGF. Zebrafish are particularly well suited to animal model studies of the cardiovascular system due to their transparent physiology in the embryo stage. A study of inhibition of zebrafish EGRF showed that it has a crucial role in cardiovascular function, as evidenced by resulting defects.
