Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1 and ERK2) are both known as microtubule associated protein 2 kinase (MAP kinase 2) and EGF receptor T669. ERK1 is also known as p44 MAP kinase and myelin basic protein kinase; ERK2 is known as mitogen activated protein kinase 2, p42 MAP kinase. ERK1/2 ubiquitously expressed in various tissues and cells. These kinases are important proximal components of the MAP kinase pathway involved in transmitting the signals from growth factors, neurotransmitters and hormones at the cell surface to the transcriptional events in the nucleus.
