H-FABP is also known as heart type fatty-acid binding protein, and FABP3. H-FABP belongs to the FABP family, and is a 14kD cytosolic non-enzymatic protein involved in the uptake, transport and metabolism of fatty acids. H-FABP also has a role in cell proliferation and is a candidate tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer. H-FABP was initially purified from the heart muscle, but has since been found to have a widespread tissue distribution, with highest concentration in cardiac and skeletal muscle. H-FABP has been implicated in neurodegenerative disorders, including Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease, and is a specific and sensitive biomarker for acute myocardial infarctions.
