Growth factor independent 1 (gfi1) is a murine gene essential to the maturation of mammalian lymphocytes and neutrophils and maintenance of adult hematopoietic stem cells. Zebrafish gfi1 is critical to regulating embryonic erythroid and myeloid lineage determination, as shown by morpholino knockdown. Zebrafish gfi1 is also integral to the differentiation of lymphocytes and granulocytes during embryogenesis. Gfi1 expression in zebrafish is detected in the ganglion cells of the neural retina, the developing hair cells of the ear, neuromasts of the anterior and posterior lateral line system, and in the developing epithalamus in the dorsal diencephalon.
