Ghrelin is a peptide hormone produced by the stomach in mammals, but also detectable in many other tissues. Endogenous Ghrelin participates in the regulation of food intake, body weight, energy homeostasis, it is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) and is involved in the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary. The octanoyl modification at Ser3 (n-octanoyl Ghrelin) is the major active form of Ghrelin.
