Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs) convert arginine residues in proteins into citrullines. Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs, EC 3.5.3.15), including PADI6, make up a family of posttranslational protein modification enzymes that convert arginine residues to citrulline residues in the presence of calcium ions. PADI6,The deduced 694-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 77.7 kD. RT-PCR detected expression in adult human tissues, including ovary, peripheral blood leukocytes, and testis, with weaker expression in small intestine, spleen, lung, liver, and skeletal muscle. No expression was detected in other tissues examined. The order of the genes is p-telomere--PADI2--PADI1--PADI3--PADI4--PADI6. Mouse Padi6 maps to a syntenic Pad cluster on chromosome 4E1.
