Isopropyl -D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) is a chemical analogue of galactose which cannot be hydrolysed by the enzyme beta-Galactosidase. Therefore it is an inducer for activity of the E.coli lac operon by binding and inhibiting the lac repressor without being degraded.
