Cytokeratin 10 (CK10) belongs to a diverse group of intermediate filament proteins (IFPs) that are expressed as pairs in both keratinized and non- keratinized epithelial tissue. Cytokeratins play a critical role in differentiation and tissue specialization and function to maintain the overall structural integrity of epithelial cells. CK10 is expressed in all suprabasal layers of the epidermis. It is absent in the basal layer, but appears in the first suprabasal layers and increases in concentration towards the granular layer. Expression of CK10 is related to maturation of malignant keratinocytes, preferentially detected in more-differentiated parts. CK10 is also associated with human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invasiveness. CK10 alone, or in combination with CK19, can be a novel predictor for poor prognosis of HCC patients after curative resection.
