Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) is the major carrier of cholesterol in the blood, accounting for more than 60% of total plasma cholesterol. LDL is taken up by hepatic and extrahepatic tissues through LDL receptor-mediated endocytosis where it is internalized and degraded to free cholesterol and amino acids. Uptake of native and oxidized LDL by monocyte-derived macrophages in the vessel wall results in accumulation of cholesterol and formation of atherosclerotic plaques. The mechanism underlying the uptake of LDL by both hepatic tissue and cells of the cardiovascular system is not clearly understood.
