Cystatin C (Cystatin 3, CST 3) belongs to the type 2 cystatin family, and it is encoded by the CST3 gene. In humans, all cells with a nucleus produce Cystatin C as a chain of 120 amino acids. It is found in virtually all tissues and bodily fluids. It is a potent inhibitor of of lysosomal proteinases and probably one of the most important extracellular inhibitors of cysteine proteases (it prevents the breakdown of proteins outside the cell by a specific type of protein degrading enzymes). Through regulating cysteineprotease activity, Cystatin C has been reported to be involved in many disease processes, such as inflammation and tumor metastasis. Studies have also investigated Cystatin C as a marker of kidney function in the adjustment of medication dosages. In addition, Cystatin C has been investigated as a prognostic marker in several forms of cancer, several types of cardiovascular disease (including myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral arterial disease and metabolic syndrome), and also Alzheimer’s disease. The BioLegend Human Cystatin C LEGEND MAX(TM) ELISA kit is a Sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) with 96 well microtiter strip plates that are pre-coated with a capture antibody. This ELISA kit is specifically designed for the accurate quantitation of analytes from cell culture supernatant, serum, plasma or other biological fluids. It is analytically validated and provides ready to use reagents.
