The MCF-7 cell line was established from the pleural effusion of a patient suffering from a breast adenocarcinoma. It retains several characteristics of differentiated mammary epithelium including the ability to process estradiol via cytoplasmic estrogen receptors and the capability of forming domes. Growth of MCF-7 cells is inhibited by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). Secretion of IGFBP's can be modulated by treatment with anti-estrogens.
