Neurofilament L, 68kD (NF-L)

Neurofilaments are the 10 nm or intermediate filament proteins found particularly abundantly in axons of large projection neurons. They probably function to provide structural support for neurons and their synapses and to support the large axon diameters required for rapid conduction of impulses down axons. Neurofilaments are composed predominantly of three major proteins called NFL, NFM and NFH. NFL is the neurofilament light or low molecular weight polypeptide and runs on SDS PAGE gels at about 68,000 Da. Antibodies to NFL are useful for identifying neuronal cells and their processes in tissue sections and in tissue culture. NFL antibody can also be useful in the diagnostics of neurofilament accumulations seen in many neurological diseases, such as Lou Gehrig's disease or Alzheimer's disease. Mutations in the protein coding region of the human NFL gene appear to cause some forms of Charcot Marie Tooth disease.\n\nApplications: \nSuitable for use in Immunofluorescence and Western Blot. Other applications not tested.\n\nRecommended Dilutions:\nImmunofluorescence: 1:50-1:250\nWestern Blot: 1:2500-1:5000\nOptimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.\n\nStorage and Stability:\nMay be stored at 4 degrees C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20 degrees C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
