beta -catenin is a 94 kD nuclear and cytoplasmic protein containing Armadillo repeats. This protein is involved in cell-cell adhesion and the wingless/WNT signaling pathway, and has been implicated as an oncogene. beta-catenin can be modified by glycosylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination to target it for degradation. This protein has been shown to interact with E-cadherin, alpha-catenin, axin, APC, GSK-3beta, and Tcf/Lef. Dissociation from axin allows cytoplasmic accumulation. After nuclear translocation, it binds Tcf/Lef.
