The protein plays an important role in hepatic lipase reaction, and functions similarly to Apo A1 by taking up cholesterol and phospholipids from cell membranes. It is synthesized as a precursor in the liver and the intestine. The Apo A2 gene is located on chromosome 1 at the 1q21-1q23 region.
