SSE-5 was initiated in 1964 from pooled embryos of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorynchus nerka). The cell line that is also known as Sockeye Salmon embryo-5, is susceptible to infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), viral hemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) and infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV). For replication of salmonid viruses SSE-5 cells should be grown at 18C.
