The tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member A (tnfrsfa) protein was previously known as ovarian tumor necrosis factor receptor (OTR). Tnfrsfa is central to positive regulation of apoptosis. It is highly expressed in the ovary and presents lightly in other tissues throughout the organism. Zebrafish homologs of mammalian Apo2 ligand/tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis inducing ligand (Apo2L/TRAIL) were shown in a study to bind OTR. Expression of these ligands was shown to induce apoptosis. Similarly, inhibition of OTR blocked ligand-induced apoptosis. These findings elucidate the similarity between mammalian and zebrafish tissue-specific apoptosis, both in the mechanism and the functions of homologs.
