Tripartite moti- containing protein 33 (Trim-33) (also called Transcription intermediary factor 1-gamma (tif1-g) functions as an essential regulator of embryonic and adult hematopoiesis in vertebrates. Cell transplantation studies demonstrate that Trim-33 acts in a cell-autonomous manner during embryonic hematopoiesis. The Trim-33 gene is expressed specifically in ventral mesoderm and hematopoietic progenitors then downregulated as erythroid maturation occurs. Trim-33 protein localizes to a novel class of nuclear bodies in both primary mouse embryo fibroblasts and erythroleukemia cell lines. Trim-33 is required for normal erythroid cell development and survival.
