VEGFA was originally isolated as a heparin-binding secreted factor from bovine pituitary folliculo-stellate cells. It is a direct acting mitogen specific for vascular endothelial cells and capable of stimulating angiogenesis in vivo. In addition to inducing endothelial cell proliferation it promotes cell migration, inhibits apoptosis, and induces permeabilization of blood vessels. Molecular cloning has revealed multiple forms of VEGFA arising from alternative splicing of the RNA transcript.
