Vimentin is the most common Type III intermediate cytoskeletal filament protein expressed in mesenchymal cells. Reorganization of IFs is critical during mitosis and this process is regulated by protein phosphoryation. At different stages of mitosis, vimentin is phosphorylated by various kinases including Plk1, Cdk1, Aurora-B and Rho-kinase and participate in reorganization of vimentin filaments. Vimentin role has also been implicated in the rate of steroid synthesis via its role as a storage network for steroidogenic cholesterol containing lipid droplets. Reports suggest vimentin is expressed on the surface upon neutophil activation and has a role in inflammation. Over expression of vimentin has often been implicated in highly invasive tumor growth. It maps to 10p13 region of human chromosome. It is highly expressed in fibroblasts and is also expressed in many hormone-independent mammary carcinoma cell lines.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4 degrees C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20 degrees C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
