Zearalenone (Zearalanol, Zearanol, Mycotoxin F2, Toxin F2, RAL)

Zearalenone is a phenolic resorcyclic acid lactone and can be produced by a number of species of Fusarium known to colonize cereals. Zearalenone (6-[10-hydroxy-6-oxo-trans-1-undecenyl]-b-resorcyclic acid lactone), also known as F-2 toxin, is an estrogenic mycotoxin that is produced by Fusarium graminearum. This fungus can infect cereal grains and can elaborate large quantities of zearalenone.\n\nZearalenone is a naturally occurring estrogen, recognized as causing hormonal effects in animal species such as the pig. The association between zearalenone exposure and human diseases remains speculative at present; it has been considered as a possible causative agent in outbreaks of precocious pubertal changes in young children and has been suggested to have a possible involvement in human cervical cancer.\n\nSolubility: \nLimited solubility in water (~0.002g/100ml). Slightly soluble in hexane and progressively more in benzene, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, methanol, acetone. Produceds a clear, colorless solution at 5mg/ml in methanol.\n\nMelting Point: 167 degrees C\n\nLambda max (MeOH): 235, 274, 313 nm \n\nApplications: \nThe resorcylic acid lactones have estrogenic activity. Zearalenone and its derivates have been used as veterinary anabolic or estrogen substitutes.\n\nStorage and Stability:\nLyophilized powder may be stored at -20 degrees C. Stale for 12 months. Reconstitute with methanol. Aliquot and store at -20 degrees C. Reconstituted product is stable for 6 months at -20 degrees C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
