Fatty acid binding proteins are a family of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins (14-15kD) that bind long chain fatty acids, their CoA derivatives, billiruben, organic anions and other small hydrophobic molecules. A-FABP (or FABP-4) is a fat cell specific protein that is considered to facilitate the bidirectional flux of fatty acids into and out of the adipocyte in response to insulin and epinephrine.
