FGF 4 was originally designated as hst, which was identified as a transforming gene in DNA samples from human stomach cancer, and shown to be secreted by both embryonic stem cells and embryonic carcinoma. Studies have shown that FGF 4 signals through binding to the FGF Receptors (FGFRs) 1c, 2c, 3c, and 4.
