Survivin is a 142aa protein belonging to the IAP family and containing one BIR repeat that is necessary for HBXIP binding. It is a component of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) that acts as a key regulator of mitosis by ensuring correct chromosome alignment and segregation, chromatin-induced microtubule stabilization and spindle assembly as well as mediates targeting of the chromosomal passenger complex to the centromere and midbody. It is a potentially significant protein in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of various cancers. Survivin is a critical regulator of multiple processes, including proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Its isoforms play vital role in mitosis. Expression is seen in fetal kidney, liver, adenocarcinoma (lung, pancreas, colon, breast, uterus and prostate), high-grade lymphomas and various renal cell carcinoma cell lines.
