Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-b1) is a member of the tgf family of growth factors involved in the regulation of a variety of cellular activities. In mammals, TGF-b1regulates reproduction, and ovarian function in particular. In humans, TGF-b1controls proliferation, differentiation and other functions in multiple cell types, and positively and negatively regulates a variety of growth factors. Many cells synthesize TGF-b1and have specific receptors for it. TGF-b1 is a potent stimulator of osteoblastic bone formation. The role of TGF-b1in zebrafish and other lower vertebrates is not well characterized in scientific literature, but TGF-b1 has been found to regulate oocyte maturation in fish.
