Van gogh-like 2 (vangl-2) is a transmembrane protein encoded by strabismus (stbm). Research into the involvment of tag1, lama1 and stbm with migration of facial branchiomotor neurons (FBMNs) in the zebrafish hindbrain suggests that vangl-2 participates, together with tag1 and lama1, in a common mechanism to regulate FBMN migration by incorporating signaling between the FBMN and its environment. In another separate study of zebrafish tailbud elongation and its relation to the cadherin subfamily of cell- cell adhesion molecules, vangl-2, associated with the Wnt (non-canonical) signaling/planar cell polarity pathway, interacts with N-cadherin in a cooperative manner to mediate tail morphogenesis. The vang/stbm gene is a key component in planar cell polarity signaling in Drosophila in addition to its role in regulating two distinct Wnt signals in order to influence vertebrate gastrulation patterning and morphogenesis.
