Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), a group of structurally and functionally related growth factors, may play important roles in vascular system formation during embryonic development, the regulation of capillary growth in adults, and the maintenance of normal vasculature. It is a ligand for the receptor tyrosine kinases VEGFR-3 and VEGFR2, both of which are expressed by endothelial cells. VEGF-C mRNA has been detected in human heart, placenta, muscle, ovary, and small intestine, as well as in malignant tissues. In addition, VEGF-C mRNA expression was detected in over 50% of tumor specimens studied.
