VEGFR2 is the major VEGF receptor in human malignancies. VEGFR2 is highly expressed in colon cancer endothelium and relates to increased tumor vascularity and high metastatic ability. Binding of VEGF to VEGFR2 on endothelial cells results in receptor phosphorylation and triggering of a cascade of events leading to endothelial cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis inhibition and maturation of vascular structures. Human VEGFR2 gene is mapped to chromosome 4q11-q12.
