The CD117 molecule, a tyrosine kinase receptor with a molecular weight of 145kD, is encoded by proto-oncogene c-kit. The stem cell factor (SCF) binding to the CD117/c-kit receptor triggers homodimerization and intermolecular tyrosine phosphorylation, thus initiating signal transduction. The receptor tyrosine kinase CD117/c-kit and its ligand SCF are essential to the maturation of hemopoietic, primordial germ cells precursors and melanocytes during embryonic development. Multiple cellular functions are affected by CD117/c-kit dependent signals including cell survival, proliferation, adhesion, differentiation and functional maturation of hemopoietic cells.
