The product of this gene belongs to the SNF2/RAD54 helicase family. It represents the main component of the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase complex and plays an important role in epigenetic transcriptional repression. Patients with dermatomyositis develop antibodies against this protein.
CHD4/Mi2beta is a helicase component of the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) complex that functions to remodel chromatin and repress transcription. Outside of the NuRD complex, CHD4/Mi2beta can function as an activator of transcription in association with p300 histone acetyltransferase. Alternate names for CHD4/Mi2beta include chromodomain-helicase-DNA-binding protein 4, CHD-4, ATP-dependent helicase CHD4, Mi-2 autoantigen 218kD protein, Mi2-beta, Mi-2b and DKFZp686E06161.
