Friend leukemia integration 1a (Fli-1a) is an ETS domain transcription factor. The Fli-1a zebrafish homologue has shown similarities to those in other vertebrates in aa sequence and DNA binding properties. Initial expression occurs in the posterior lateral mesoderm, within hemangioblast precursors of blood and endothelium. Fli-1a is also expressed at sites of vasculogenesis. Loss of function studies in zebrafish embryos demonstrate complete absence of hemangioblasts, indicating that Fli-1a is essential. Fli-1 acts upstream of key hemangioblast genes Gata2, Scl, Lmo2, and Etsrp, indicating its higher position in transcriptional regulatory hierarchy for hemangioblast specification in vertebrate embryos.
